Kitchens can take either, though tile generally handles a dishwasher leak better than a nailed down hardwood floor. Basements usually call for a floating product over an underlayment, so the floor can move independently of the slab under it.

If your basement slab already has a crack running through it, what you put over it matters. Rigid tile tends to telegraph slab movement straight through the grout lines. Floating vinyl plank usually rides over it better.

Radon comes up on basement projects too, since about half of Colorado homes test at radon levels above the EPA action level. Sealing slab cracks and penetrations while the floor is open is cheap compared to doing it later, and it works alongside a mitigation system rather than in place of one.
